"I Rely Upon Your Vigilance"
PERSONAL LETTER FROM GEORGE WASHINGTON TO CAPTAIN JOHN STOKES CIRCA 1779
CAPTAIN JOHN STOKES - REVOLUTIONARY WAR
Captain John Stokes is one of my personal heroes. The letter from George Washington to Captain Stokes advocating for constant vigilance is my screen saver on my phone, I look at it daily. Captain Stokes fought many battles for General Washington, and was gravely injured at the Battle of Waxhaws and taken as a prisoner of war. Miraculously, he survived, and he was named a representative of the State Constitutional Convention that met in Fayetteville in 1789 that covered all of the North Carolina and Tennessee-territory counties. These representatives ratified the United States Constitution on behalf of the Tennessee-territories which were at that time a part of North Carolina. Captain John Stokes also taught law to future President, and Nashvillian, Andrew Jackson. I am very proud to be related to this courageous man.
My first cousin 5 times removed was a man by the name of W.B. Stokes. He was part of the first class of Tennessee Congressional Republicans that ratified the 14th Amendment, which set the global standard for government recognizing and respecting individual freedom. He represented East Tennessee and his papers are in the Tennessee State Capital.
LEO NIELSON & DR. CRAIG NIELSON
My grandfather Leo Nielson, was an advocate for economic prosperity in Tennessee and a proud member of the Chamber of Commerce while President of Tennessee Central Railways. He came to Nashville after heading the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, where he was confirmed by President Truman in 1952. He raised three children in Nashville with his wife Alma, including my Dad, Dr. Craig Nielson, who after finishing high school in Nashville attended and graduated from Harvard University.
PEGGY STOKES NIELSON (PEG)
My Mom is the bravest woman I've ever encountered. Besides having the sharpest political mind of anyone I know, she has the best heart. She also makes a mean Pumpkin Pie!
